Hi Roy,
thanks for the comment. I'm still waiting for you to come and show me where to buy this deadly ant powder. And if you know of anything that will discourage the rats that play above the kitchen and bathroom ceilings I'd love to hear about it.
The Ramadan lamp is hiding somewhere, I promise to go and find it. Seriously, you became a bearded effendi and blended in, it's different for a woman. I know a few people who are more in touch with 'real' Egyptians than I am and they're commenting on how much more religious Ramamdan, and the people in general, are becoming. Yes, Maadi is still an expat oasis but time doesn't stand still.

Sharon,
Very quiet on your blog at the moment so let me see if we can get a rat thread started.
I would have thought Jakarta would have taught you all about dealing with rats, but here is my two pennyworth.
If you can't accept them as part of the household( easiest option), please don't poison them. They will come back to haunt you by crawling away to die in inaccessible spaces and decaying with the attendant smell that will put you off your ratatouille. It's happened to me once, so never again.
Traps are your best option if you really want to rid yourself of your furry companions.
I did resort to poison in Houston to rid the screened atrium of a real brute who was eating our carefully tended flowers. He seemed to thrive on the diet until he ate one too many of the poison bars and I dispatched him with a sand wedge, whilst he was groggy, messy but it had a certain finality.
Hope the traffic improves, if not resort to posting Pete's comments on the Welsh and Irish performances. That should build up a head of steam......
Roy
